A major upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018 These earphones appear better, feel stronger and are generally more polished. They also feature dual microphones that work well in our tests for FaceTime, Skype, and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app offers a vast variety of EQ presets, which can be adjusted and saved so you can listen to podcasts and music in the style you prefer. This is what makes these headphones stand out from other ANC headphones and the Soundcore app is extremely easy to use.

When ANC is on the Q30's 40mm drivers effectively cut out almost all ambient noise, and provide excellent listening. The Q30's sound signature is natural, but a little on treble. Some may not be a fan of the bass response (we had better results with the Bass Booster EQ). However, you can easily fix this by using the Soundcore application, as there's an eight-band equalizer to allow you to tweak.

The left earcup has an power button as well as a pairing button and an USB-C charging port. The right earcup has play/pause, and the volume up and down buttons. Double-clicking these buttons lets you skip tracks or repeat the previous one. You can also make use of voice commands to instruct them to change modes or set alarms. The right ear cup can also be covered with your hand to enable ambient mode, to allow you to be aware of what is happening around you, without removing the wireles headphones (please click the next document).

The battery life of these headphones is excellent and the battery life is also excellent. In our tests with ANC enabled the Q30 was able to last for nearly an hour longer than its rivals. This leaves plenty of time for an extended flight or working for a long time. They can be easily recharged with the included USB-C cable, and you'll see a warning when they're approaching empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of powerful over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offers both active noise cancellation, as well as Bluetooth playback. They are designed to be premium, high-end headphones that can be used at home or on the move. The headphones are a bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their outstanding sound quality is what makes them stand out.

The Focal Bathys come in a small, attractive white box with a cloth finish. It comes with all the accessories that you'll require. There's a fold-flat headphone carry case, USB-C to USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

The battery's capacity is 600mAh, which can last a whole day of casual listening. They also have an audio input to use wired. When used wirelessly they're paired via Bluetooth and you can manage their functions via an app (now known as Focal and Naim which is probably in the same vein as their English sister brand Naim's products for audio that are network-aware) or using the button that's on the left ear cup which scrolls between ANC profiles like'soft','silent transparent', and full.

The app allows you to adjust various settings, including the brightness of the LEDs and the EQ presets (including music's profile, which sounds brighter and neutraler than the other profiles) and the battery life. You can also choose the ANC level and mode and setting an 'acoustic settings that adjusts the sensitivity to mimic the sound of headphones in a different acoustic room.

The Focal Bathys have bass-rich, rich sound profiles that delivers extra energy and warmth to your favorite tracks. The result is that instruments and vocals sound muted, while details like cymbals might be less noticeable than on other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation compared to other headphones that feature higher-end technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has earned a reputable reputation for its headphones, and the WH-1000XM5 is not an exception. It sits at the upper end of the mainstream over-ear headphone market, edging into the 'luxury lifestyle' area where the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc hang out. This means the XM5s have a premium price tag but, if you can afford it, there are a few better over the ear wireless headphones out there.

The XM5s come with a variety of features that simplify the lives of the listener, and also automate tasks they would otherwise be required to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to close to high-res) is available and also support for wireles Headphones Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This lets high-quality music to be streamed with bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. The built-in microphone is capable of making hands-free phone calls.

The XM5 headphones aren't any different from the previous generation of headphones from WH in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the best at eliminating the constant drones that are heard in train and underground carriages. The XM5s are great at their job isolating listeners from the background noise of airports and busy streets also.

Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s aren't quite as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a greater sense of clarity and realism as well. For example the bass track on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys muscles with real power and definition, while not sagging everything else. The XM5s are also able to produce precise and precise bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is excellent and can last up to 30 hours listening time when ANC is in use and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is plenty for a weekend getaway or several days of heavy usage.

The only issue is that the XM5s do not have any dust or water resistance protection. Sony recommends not sweating in them or wearing them in the rain. This may not be a major issue for everyone else however, for those who spend a lot of time in the gym or live in a rainy region, it could be a big issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones over-ear that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with neutral audio profiles that emphasizes the mids and highs while not going too loud on either ends of the spectrum. They are ideal for movies and music. They also offer higher fidelity than most competing pairs of headphones.

The headphones are light in construction that is comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made from memory foam covered in a woven fabric. They fit comfortably on the ears without putting pressure on the sides of the face. The earcups can also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges feature a solid but not overly robust clamping force that makes sure that the ear cups remain in place throughout listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button on the top of the right earcup. It also has a pushable jog dial-like button similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it around to control volume and press it one three, twice, or even three times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button triggers Siri. These buttons are well-placed and simple to use, however I would have liked an option to turn off the headphones when not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when they are removed from your ear or placed in their case. They only come back on when you put them on your head again.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which uses the accelerometers and gyroscopes in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you're going, and then repositions sounds to make it seem like they're coming from those locations. This creates a cinema-like experience for Wireles Headphones movies and videos that were recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able enjoy it on other devices.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel a bit ripped off entering an Apple Store and spending $549 on them if I knew they'd be beaten in a year by the second-generation model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery performance, making it hard to justify the extra cost for most people.
