After Lowry, a burly Irishman, picked his ball out of the hole at No. 16, he faked as if he was going to throw it into the crowd before depositing it in his pocket. Find the board with the six "Arrow AR1" keyway locks. Continue with the AR1 lock board. Any physical security assessment should consider defenses against the full range of potential threats, not just vulnerability to lock picking. They allow very precise control over torque, especially when employing advanced picking techniques that involve a slight reversing of the rotation of the keyway. The reigning U.S. amateur champion, who is turning pro, scored his third 72 of the week in the final round and tied for 21st and at five over. Victor Dubuisson of France and caddie Leonard Francois walk up the third fairway during the first round of the 80th Masters Golf Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club. Charl Schwartzel, of South Africa, hits out of a bunker on the fourth hole during the second round of the 2016 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. Probably the best book I've found on picking locks is the Gerry Finch Manual of Lock Picking, which unfortunately appears to be out of print as of this writing. In the lab you'll find a collection of small (12 inch by 18 inch) lock boards, each containing six specially pinned locks with a given keyway.

First count them, making sure you find all five (or six). The first sign of spool and mushroom pins is that the lock will appear to be picked, but will only turn a few degrees. Unfortunately, these designs are less than ideal, and many of the "standard" picks are too large to fit and move comfortably in common lock keyways. The selection of the torque tool is just as important as that of the pick, but, again, commercial pick kits often fail to include a sufficient range of sizes and designs to allow good control and feel across the range of common locks. This keyway is common in commercial and residential locks in the US, and is close in shape and size to a number of other common keyways, including that used by Kwikset, a very popular (and easily defeated) line of US residential locks. When you feel confident visualizing and using picks to maneuver around the pins in the AR1 and SX keyways, you're ready to start actually opening locks.

Work your pick into the keyway and feel the pins. See Figures 3 and 4. Once you're comfortable with the AR1 keyway, move on to the "Ilco SX" keyway locks and repeat the exercise. It feels much as it does when binding and unset, but will not set (since a binding pin can only move up, not down). It is very important when you do the exercises that you not move on to the next until you have completely and comfortably mastered the exercise you're working on. Electronic locks, of course, do not have mechanical tumblers and are so not vulnerable to many of the physical manipulations exploited in tradtional lock picking. Figure 2. Pin tumbler lock with a correct key inserted. See Figure 1. (In practice, the cuts are produced by stacking pin segments of particular lengths, not by actually cutting the pins; hence the term "pin stack.") With no key in the lock, all the pin stack cuts rest within the plug. Apply light torque while pivoting a long, wavy rake inside the lock, inserting and removing it slightly as you go. The proper pick and torque tool selection depend on the shape of the keyway, the features of the lock, the picking technique, and the individual preferences of the user.
