How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). 4. ECU

It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially when they're a Bosch sensor like ours. 5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle.
