A couple have gone to war with officialdom by refusing to pay their council tax after their rubbish wasn't collected for a month.

Malachi, 85, and Sue Doyle, 80, cancelled their direct debit to Swale Borough Council because their bins have not been taken from their home in Faversham, Kent since mid-March.

The pensioners said they should not have to pay for a service that is not being provided - and have urged others to halt their payments too until the issue is resolved.

They are among many residents across Swale, Maidstone, and Ashford who have endured disruption since Suez took over the £152million contract on March 25, it is claimed.

Sue said: 'We have done everything they ask. They tell you to ring within two days if you are missed by the collectors, and if you do, they say,"'we should have done it, and we'll get in touch".

The pensioners urged other residents facing the same problem to also stop paying their council tax
